It’s that time of the year where Consumer Science hosts the 3rd year farewell, but this time it is totally different BECAUSE I will be part of the ceremony ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ … I’m super excited, been planning on what to wear since last year even though I did not know what the theme would be. Last month they told us what the theme would be, not what I was expecting though, I dony know who came up with the theme, but the totally chose something out of my comfort zone.

The theme for 2013 3rd year farewell is Rock n Roll *astonished*… Now tell me, what does one wear? Do I wear snickers? Torn up jeans? Wow I need to do some research.

While on the net, I found some awesome outfits I could wear and feel comfortable in. I will definetlely rock up in my jeans (black preferably), red boots and a red peplum top (it has to be red and leather) and not forgetting a leather jacket. I think I’ll look super hot. ha ha ha….

This luncheon (farewell) came in the right time, I definetely need to cool down the stress and enjoy the day without having to think about the workload I have.

Okay enough about the fashion and all my stresses, one of the important things about the farewell is the food that will be served.

I have ideas of my own and I hope the 2nd years will prepare something simalar to what I was thinking about.

They will serve a 3 course meal, due to the fact it will only take place for a few hours (3-4 hours).
Below are the 3 courses I think they t=should serve (ROCK n ROLL style):

1st Course

Nachos with guacamole and mango salsa dip

2nd Course

Fried chips
Spare Ribs and barbecue
Battered Onion rings

3rd Course

Banana split with caramel peanut sprinkle

The reason why I chose this menu is because, Rock stars are the kind of people wwho always have take outs and these are the kind of foods that they are most likely to eat, if its not fries its most likely pizza, etc.

I can’t wait for the 30th of May. It’s a day that I will always remember.

AFTER THE LUNCHEON, I’m PAINTINT THE TOWN RED!!! WANNA JOIN ๐Ÿ˜‰

The New Innovation!!!

100_1075

Who would’ve guessed this new inovation would work?

It is seriously a shocker, the person who came up with this brilliant idea gets a standing ovation from me!

Gone are those days of using metal graters that rust when they are exposed to water. This new brilliant innovation is called the plate grater, it is found at any pick n pay stores.

The following video, is to show you how the plate grater works and I hope after watching it, you will also be astouned and also get yourself one of the amazing palte graters.

This definetely a keeper. If I did not attend the Pick n Pay Taste of Cape Town, I’d be totally clueless and not know if such a awesome product is available.

Until next time, for now, I’m rushing to get my own plate grater!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Importance of Food Science

This is a great post, as a food science student, I love letting people know about the importance of food science and I just thought this post explins it perfectely.
written by David Hayden.

Farmingamerica's Blog

Many may ask why food science is important? ย Food Science has a hand in every product that is consumed. ย Iโ€™d like to hit a few highlights that may unveil why we need food science within the industry.

The world has progressed through hunter-gatherer, agricultural, and industrial stages to being a provider of goods and services. ย Along the way our reliance on a stable food supply ย has increased dramatically. ย This started with the domestication of plants and animals in order to feed our ever growing population which has now reach nearly 7 billion!ย The majority of the population are no longer connected to their food nor are they familiar with general agriculture production practices that make food so readily available.ย ย Funny how things always stem back to agriculture.

The commitment of food science and technology professionals is to advance the science of food, all the while ensuring a safe and abundant food supplyโ€ฆ

Winter Food

PFCAH5U87WCA0YH56RCA9AN995CABADI0KCAXIQZ3SCA90S400CA1MRIWSCAQ0YQZ4CA0HKILGCAN3GNZ6CATKGLR4CACQ84R8CAKEC5TECAR1PWG6CA0C1QSGCAEF8LS6CAWPIF6RCA4RHM2JCA5SJVOPfinal17

It is nearly winter and we dont only need to shop for winter clothes, but we need to know the winter recipes to keep ourselves warm through the winter.

I have a few recipes to share with you, easy recipes to keep you and your family warm and happy.

ย I am Proudly South African, this first recipe is inspired by my grandmother and the Robhertsons Chef (Ruben).

To keep warm this winter make this mouth watering recipe called umgqusho, its is a mixure of samp and beans made in one pot and you can add any other ingredients, ranging from vegetables, meat or just plain old samp and beens with seasoning.

Umngqusho

1 cup speckled sugar beans
1 cup samp meilies
Oil for frying
250 grs bacon, diced (optional)
2 large onions, chopped
1 large green pepper, chopped
1 clove of garlic, chopped
3 tomatoes, diced
2 tsp curry powder, more if needed
Salt and pepper
Sugar, to taste

โ– Sort the beans, and soak overnight (or, if like me, youโ€™re in a hurry, soak in boiling water for at least 2 hours)
โ– Boil until soft (without salt), about 1 1/2 hours, discard the water and rinse the beans well
โ– Meanwhile, sort the samp meilies and boil until soft, also about 1 1/2 hours, drain and rinse
โ– Combine the beans and samp, top up the pot with water and simmer together while you make the relish
โ– Fry the onions, add green pepper, and fry until tender.
โ– Add the bacon, fry until browned
โ– Add the curry powder, fry for about a minute, careful not to burn the spice
โ– Add the tomatoes, garlic, seasoning and a little sugar
โ– Cook until a nice relish forms
โ– Check the flavour, it should be quite spicy (add some more curry if you think it needs it)
โ– Stir the relish into the samp and beans
โ– Cook gently to combine the flavours, until the samp and beans are soft and mushy, this takes several hours. Add a little extra water when needed, and watch that it doesnโ€™t stick at the bottom โ€“ I stir the pot regularly

The following recipe I have for you the most famous and loved winter food to eat, which is soup.
Soup keeps you warm and sated.
The soup that I’m talking about is the thick soup which is made by combining ingredients such as meat and vegetables with stock, juice, water, or another liquid. Hot soups are additionally characterized by boiling solid ingredients in liquids in a pot until the flavors are extracted. Soups may be similar to stews or umnqusho, but soups have more liquid than the two.

The following recipe is one of my favourite, during winter my granny would always make it for the family, we would gather in the sitting room watch TV in front of the heater and eat the soup. Those are the moments that I would always cherish for the rest of my life.

A tasty vegetable beef soup recipe, made with meaty soup bones and vegetables.
Ingredients:

โ€ขbeef soup bones with meat (shanks), 2 pounds
โ€ข7 cups water
โ€ข1 can (10 1/2 ounces) condensed beef broth
โ€ข1 teaspoon salt
โ€ข3/4 cup chopped onion
โ€ข3/4 cup chopped celery
โ€ข1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
โ€ข1 bay leaf
โ€ข2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes
โ€ข2 cups shredded cabbage
โ€ข1 cup thinly sliced carrots
โ€ข1 1/2 cups fresh cut green beans, or frozen
โ€ข1 1/2 cups diced raw potato
โ€ข1 teaspoon sugar
โ€ข2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Preparation:
Cut meat into small cubes, discarding excess fat. Put in a large stockpot with the bones, water, broth, salt, onions, celery, pepper, and bay leaf. Cover and simmer for 3 hours. Add remaining ingredients; simmer 45 minutes longer, or until vegetables are tender. Taste and adjust seasonings

CPUT OPEN DAY (9-11 MAY 2013)

CPUT OPEN DAY (9-11 MAY 2013)

It is yet another year that Cput host the Open day exhibition at the Cape Town campus. Scholars all over CPT are here to find out more about the courses that the University offers. It is such a pleasure to be part of such an exciting event.

Education is very important and I’m happy to see that many scholars are here to know more about what courses CPUT has to offer and probably apply for next year.

It is bommer that the Consumer Science stall did not win on the competition because I thought it was the most prettiest, it was colourful and attracted many scholars.

Advice to all the scholars who want to apply for varsity next year and future years, PLEASE and pretty please apply for something that you are interested on and not something that your friends want to study or what your parents want you to study, this is your life and you need to make that decision for yourself, you dont wanna spend 3years in a course that you do not enjoy or love! and PLEASE do not choose a course because you know that it will bring you alot of money!!!!!

The Taste of Cape Town

Picture1

“Kuthwa hamba uzobona”, I had to say it in my own language, but what im trying to say is “go and you will see”.

It was my first time attending the Taste of Cape Town , Brought to you by Pick ‘n Pay together with Orbit and I had the most awesome time ever, I’ll surely attend it year after year no doubt.

What I enjoyed the most about this event is the different food that was available in one place. This day was all about networking with people who are in the food business, as 3rd year students, its very important because, we are now done with school and there’s no time for us to waste, because in a few months time we will be in the business world and working, it is a very important thing to network, because at the end of the day those people might organise you a job or some might just employ you.

Being at the event, opened my eyes to see what was in the world, it was also a fun experience having to try other cuisines. I will most definitely go there year after year!!!!!

It will be a great thing if I also see you there ๐Ÿ˜‰

What are we realy eating????

Is it safe now to consume food?

Can we trust the manufacturing companies that produce the food that we eat?

These are the questions that we should ask ourselves when purchasing food, we put so much in these companies and sometimes they just let us down.

Yesterday I was having a chat with my grandmother and she was telling me about, how healthy people were in here generation, they were not exposed to many range of products, like these modified and synthetic products. they only ate natural products and once in a while they bought meat at a butchery, but they slaughtered their only meat.

Thank God for Manufacturing companies, but question is, are they the ones who cause all these lifestyle diseases? With the added sodium the products they produce contain, the blame surely points to them.

Its every persons responsibility to choose what they consume, but think of the convinience these products have, people fall into the trick that its more easier to buy the manufactured product than to stand in the kitchen and make your own.

Yes it is time consuming to prepare food on your own and prepare a more healthier meal, but the negative side is thatย we will have much less time on earth if we continue eating foods produced by these manufacturing companies.

The scandal of meat realy turned everyones heads and got people speaking, the retail stores realy betrayed their customers, because people had put so much trust on them. I beleive that they get so greedy for money that they ignore the fact that we as consumers are the one buying the food and the minute that we decide to stop buying from them is the minute where they get bankrupt.

people are the ones who keep their businesses working, but they forget to take care of the people.

okay, I think I got carried away there just for a second, as I was saying, back in the days people lived more healthier. I think we should bring back the days where we used to plant our own fruit and vegetables, cook for our families instead of going to take-away outlets and slaughter our own meats, because the Food Manufacturers nd Companies have shown that they cannot be trusted.

I’m not being negative here, but I’m trying to make people see and know what they are consuming, I have nothing against the manufacturing companies because next year I’ll be working in one of the companies.

The following article is about the meat scandal that is currently in South Africa, PLEASE READ!!!
http://www.moneyweb.co.za/moneyweb-blogs-from-the-sidelines/global-meat-scandal-and-its-effect-on-the-south-af

Enjoy and stay alert!!! ๐Ÿ™‚
